Smoked my third ever pipe today and for the first time it stayed lit to the finish! It may never happen again as it was the result of an experiment, so thought it was worth mentioning.

For the record it was G L Pease’ ‘Chelsea Morning’ in a Peterson Aran rusticated #87 fishtail, but I’d packed the pipe the day before and left it to sit like that, in its bag in a drawer, to dry - as I’d already tried once with no drying time and once with a little, and wanted to see the difference.

Are you packing the tobacco as you smoke it? I usually give my pipe a light tamping every 5 minutes and that keeps the bowl rolling for the entirety of the smoke session.

All tips are welcome, but I suspect I might have been overdoing it with the tamping to start with and compacting the lower part of the bowl too much.

Had my first try of an aromatic yesterday; Cult Blood Red Moon in a Missouri Meerschaum Cobbit corn cob pipe. Honestly, this was a combination I got specifically with my wife’s blessing (and that she wants to try herself), and may not have purchased otherwise, but I have to say that the pipe itself exceeds expectations significantly. Very pleasant to smoke with. It would likely be foolish to write off aromatics based on a sample of 1 and I won’t do so at this very early stage, but I can’t say it made a great impression on me on this occasion. Perhaps I’d dried the tobacco too much - although there was still a little bit of a ‘gurgle’ at times. The strong cherry tin note didn‘t come through for me, and I finished the bowl wanting more of something. I came close to picking up my Peterson immediately and having another bowl of the Chelsea Morning, but imagine I’d have had way too much nicotine all at once if I‘d done so!

I am not much of an Aromatic guy myself and have several in my lineup. I always go back to Virginia blends and Codger blends. 1Q by Lane Limited is a good Aromatic to try, same with Old Toby by The Country Squire. I find the Cherry blends to be too much. Aromatics will be more soppy and gurgle more. That’s cool your wife wants to try it, my wife hates all tobacco.

i have wondered about giving the 1Q a shot, seeing as it seems to be almost the archetypal aromatic - the cost of pipe tobacco in NZ is absolutely ludicrous, so I have to attempt to make good decisions where possible! I haven‘t seen Old Toby but will keep it in mind. If you’d like to mention any particular Virginia or Codger blends you enjoy that would be welcome.

My wife and I both smoked cigarettes when we met, but quit together shortly thereafter. She’s very supportive and has been known to say things like: ‘I think you should buy that motorcycle’ on many occasions in the past. I don’t know what I’ve done to deserve her, frankly.

A good everyday codger blend is Carter Hall. For Virginia blends I really like Cornell & Diehl Crooner, it’s got deertongue in it. Lane Limited HGL is a good English/Cavendish mixture. Peterson Elizabethan Mixture is a good Virginia Perique blend.
