I enjoyed the film- i saw it get bashed alot by critics, but i thought sean penn was just hammy enough to make it work. Lawless was a better film overall, but this was entertaining- the over the top violence, the absurd plotpoints, i can't complain. I actually have to disagree with Hutch on that comment- i always hate when indiana jones film or a noir movie comes out, because then folks will assume that i'm dressing in such a way on account of the film, or i'll hear the stupid comments like hey are you in such and such a film hawhaawhaw.. It is a shame though- you'd think that seeing how stylish things were back then you'd see more people saying to themselves these people looked good, and see the contrast between then and now.

I will be waiting for cable, as this film got some of the worst reviews I've seen in a long time. I particularly liked the one that said, "It's like a 13-year-old's dinner-theater remake of The Untouchables"!

I do like my fair share of mindless action, so I'll see this one, but like Lawless I'm going in with low expectations and perhaps I'll be surprised. I did end up liking Lawless.

I really enjoyed this movie! You just sit back and take it all in. Not a whole lot of thinking to be done in this flick, and sometimes that's just refreshing. It's very period and I think a lot of people in this forum will enjoy it for that aspect alone.

I did too! There were so many great moments in this movie, and with these actors involved, it's hard to go wrong. If there are people hesitating about seeing this movie -- don't!

The characters are not wearing COLLAR BARS on there shirts. Its a small detail but worth a mention. I wonder what other small details were over looked?

Historically, large elements of both law enforcement organizations were on the payroll of Jack Dragna, Benjamin Siegel and, later, Micky Cohen.

I just saw Gangster Squad with my 25 year old son. We both liked it a lot. Basically Sena Penn played Jimmy Cagney who was playing Mickey Cohen. Sean is starting to act like Jimmy, sneer and all. The violence wasn't mindless. over done maybe, but those guys did things with a purpose.

I quickly noticed three mistakes, two could have been easily changed. 1. You can't shoot a Tommy *** one handed and hit anything in front of you more than once. Dad fired one in WW2 and they climb like a monkey up a banana tree. They should have stuck to one Tommy *** per person. 2. Shooting a house with a Tommy *** doesn't make black marks where the ****** hole was blown out by Pyrotechnics. I think they're stuck with this one. I don't trust Hollywood to shoot a real Tommy *** in my neighborhood. 3. When you shoot a Tommy ***, the brass falling on the floor is blackened, not bright and shinny. This one should have been fixed. The shot didn't have more than 10-15 pieces. Just shoot them from a 1911 and they'll look right.

The movie wasn't too close to being historically correct either. Chief Parker was the "old chief" in the movie set in 1949, but wasn't promoted to Chief of Police until 1950. Mickey Cohen wasn't killed with a lead pipe, but was at least attacked with one in prison. Were Police uniforms soooo incredibly bad looking and loose back then? The uniformed cops (with the exception of Coleman Harris) all looked horrible. I guess he HAD to look better because he had a title role??

I agree with both of you. I too had just finished reading the book so it was hard to sit and watch the inaccuracies. But if you could just focus on the scenery it was good. 1961 MJS you are spot on about Peen playing Cagney playing Mickey.
