Thanks for the link, Cookie. The quality of these old Canadian shoes just blows me away. Not always the most exciting styles, but excellent leather, excellent workmanship and built like an absolute tank.

A question of construction for you, Cookie:
I'm going to try to get the right terminology to explain what I'm trying to ask.
Here are three pairs of shoes, a pair by Gale and two by Hartt (though the two pairs of Hartts are probably separated by about 30 years) and I can't say I recall having seen this style of construction on other makes, with the vamp overlapping the quarter quite like this. It's also interesting to see the decline in quality by Hartt. The newer pair is still relatively nice, but there is a marked decline in the quality of the leather, and of construction in that the older pair has nailed soles and 4 vs 3 lines of stitching on the toe cap and quarter.

Short answer = water proofing . Wicking/shucking/preventing moisture entry by overlapping on the shoe welt (like storm welting down further) to keep out moisture. Canada is cold and wet especially the Maritime provinces where you hang out.
Isshi likes big welts and he might have a more elaborate explanation/view.
When I see This Old House on cable when they are in Massachusetts I am amazed as an Aussie at the amount of effort put into waterproofing a house ( by Aussie standards).
Same goes for proper shoes.

If you were to see a paper pattern of that shoe you would see that it is a very efficent cutter with a minimum number of cutting dies and seams to sew. It is also conducive to making a heavy walking shoe from stouter leather.

You just don't see these colours in modern shoes = why I like vintage. The double sole is an added gem. Though I agree with Marc that they are are more likely 1950s something inside me keeps telling me they are reminiscent of the late 40s. The last shape is not rounded or chiselled enough for the 50s methinks. What size are they mate?

Cookie...the Florsheims are 10 C. My 9D feels a little tight at the waist, and the heel is a little big. Not sure how to size these. I'd guess between a true 10B-C.

These are from the 1930s. I sold them back in 2008.
REAL cool shoes, and actually a main reference point used to help ID this type of leather.
