I caught this sweet little French film over the weekend.
Its not a big hollywood spectacle. Just a quiet little film of lives upset by the economic turmoil of 1936. At the center, a father struggles to reopen a theater so that the local govt will allow him custody of his son.

The snow falls like magic pixie dust in "Paris 36," Christophe Barratier's irresistibly old-fashioned musical story of a few friends, an old theater and a time when all that mattered was song, dance and a little revolution — in that order. Realism rarely intrudes into this story, and that's how you have to watch it: as a nostalgic bonbon, and one that'll charm you if you let it.

Opening Night Film of the 2009 Alliance Francaise French Film Festival!!!!

Paris 36 (Faubourg 36) is a treat for the eyes and the ears - a lush, heart-warming and hugely entertaining musical comedy directed with flair by Christophe Barratier. The proud sentimentality that made Christophe Barratier's first film, The Chorus (Les Choristes), a runaway hit in France is back in this enchanting hit retro musical with all the period trappings of 1936 France, from accordion music to the left-wing Popular Front Alliance.

It’s 1936. Blum is in power, workers are striking and the weight of the Depression is hitting hard. While such matters might normally seem unimportant to Germain Pigoil (Gérard Jugnot), the stage manager of a small theatre in the Faubourg district, the chaos of the city has had a huge impact on him - his wife has left and taken custody of their son, and unscrupulous local entrepreneur Galapiat has closed his failing theatre. With the help of his friends, idealist Milou (Clovis Cornillac) and flawed comedian Jacky (Kad Merad, Welcome to the Sticks), Germain strikes a deal with Galapait, and sets about returning the theatre to its glory days. But their line-up of amateur cabaret and half-baked comedy looks decidedly lacklustre until the beautiful ingénue Douce walks into the auditions…the stage is set!
A fabulous reminder of the power of community and the romance of the theatre, Paris 36 (Faubourg 36) is pure delight.
