Moderne Deco-rating

I'm planning to move in the new year, and am planning to use the opportunity provided by a completely blank slate to go Deco. However, I'm not the world's biggest fan of wood tones so I'm thinking more along the lines of the Moderne/International style. Le Corbusier seating, for a start, but I'm currently hunting for ideas in black, white and metal: things in the style of the Strand Palace Hotel's original lobby, for example.

Does anyone have any suggestions for places where I might seek further inspiration?

Deco Pix has extensive Art Deco and Streamline Moderne examples, for starters.

I have taken far too many photos of Art Deco and Streamline Moderne buildings over the years - are you looking for just any good examples, or something in particular? I'd be happy to post some photos I've taken.

Technically, I have always considered the International Style to be distinct from Deco and Moderne. International Style, to me, means "glass box." Though their furniture, as you say, can work. :)

Everything I've looked at seems to be decorated with white walls and pale wooden floors, and since I'm going to be renting I don't really want to mess with that. So my idea is to start with the black/chrome combination of the seating and expand it from there. I suppose it could count as a kind of retro-futuristic vibe as well. What I'm hunting is interior shots and furniture details that will go with that and give me a chance to get the rest of the environment in tune.

For example, I've worked out a nifty trick for tall cabinets using glass doors and cut mirror foil - based on the doors on each side of this picture:

Decopix is a good place to start - thanks!

Hi Doc,

Art Deco Home is worth looking through, as there are plenty of photographs of Deco buildings and interiors scattered around the site.

Also, you should spend some time browsing through the 20th Century Society's Building of the Month archive.

If you want to go Modern take the virtual tour of probably my favourite English Modern house: The Homewood in Esher.

as Atomic Glee said Deco Pix is well worth a look - if you haven't found them yet the colour schemes are very interesting.

For furniture have a look at Deco Dame for ideas.

And there are plenty of books on Amazon UK. Here are some for starters:

• Art Deco Interiors: Decoration and Design Classics of the 1920s and 1930s - £12.50
• Art Deco House Style: An Architectural and Interior Design Source Book - £11.21
• Houses of the Art Deco Years - £9.50
• The Art Deco House - £13.19
• Art Deco Architecture: Design, Decoration and Detail from the Twenties and Thirties - £12.50

Finally, worth a trip if you're in the area is the Geffrye Museum - this is a photo of their 1930's room
