I'm thinking of pairing this up with either brown or gray pants when it arrives. How do you think I did?

The cut looks nice and I'm a big fan of multi-colour stripes! I'd also say that those grey pieces of fabric at the inside armholes identify this jacket as a high quality one.

Authentic look

Amongst "collegiate types" in the late '30s, you occasionally saw a striped jacket (usually chalk stripe flannel) paired up with glen plaid trousers and "sporty" shoes.

It's a little zany-madcap, I suppose. A little Mickey Rooneyish. (How tall are you? ) And it violates latter day traditions about no stripes with plaids. But it was done backntheday.

With a solid color I'd go for the grey - ideally medium or slightly lighter grey. It'll pick up the greys in the stripe. Browns would go against the blue/red/gray colors.

Nice coat! You don’t find many war time dated items… especially double breasted! I suppose that the fabric rationing wasn’t as bad as we sometimes think.

That color is rich, has deep red and light gray stripes. My self, I’d pair it with something that would be a rather strong contrast. You do not want to pair pants with it that are too close to the same tone of the coat. I’d say light grey or even a light tan. Ivory wool pants would look good with it as well.

Brown and blue can compliment each other in some cases but, not in this one… I’d say steer clear of brown with this coat! Go light gray, ivory or tan.

Firstly - what a rare find! A WWII era jacket, in double breasted! Considering the rationing going on then (this is when flat front really came into popularity, it was patriotic; zoot suit riots, etc.), and the incredible expense of fabric during the time, this has to be a well-made garment. Seeing that it has some added details (the grey inserts under the armholes) just lends creedance to that fact.

I really like the idea of using it as an odd jacket. It is a really sporty look, and not out of period context. Many younger gentlemen did the pairing, and you can see some fine examples of this in film -- Brideshead Revisited, the Oxford days.

I like it with grey flannels, maybe a lighter shade of navy, or if you're bold, cream. This would make a dressy, but really fun, combo.

Nice find! This inspires me to put the wild suit coat that I've got up in the classifieds, it might do pretty well. It's a larger size, at that.

That's what I thought, I once had a Double Breasted suit dated 1943 from Penny's and it had flat front pants. However, most early to mid 30's suits I've seen had flat front pants... they've been mostly the more conservitive choice of office men and doctors and such. I don't think it was really popular, people were wearing it because of the fabric rationing... no one really enjoyed rationing... it was hard times!

True! Sporty looks were rather popular during those days in most cercles of youth. In fact, most young men wore either very light pants with dark coats or dark pants with lighter coats... tweed plaids and checks were very popular in the late 30's through the 40's. They also wore white bucks with them!

I like it with grey flannels, maybe a lighter shade of navy, or if you're bold, cream. This would make a dressy, but really fun, combo.

My self, I'd steer way clear of any shade of blue that would be close with the coat's color. A pale blue would work but, I'd stay with light colors with that coat... you would want a strong contrast with that outfit, because anyother "like color" would make it look as if it was trying to pass as a suit... trust me, you don't want that!

Bottome line is, enjoy the heck out of it!

Popular doesn't always mean good (look at popular music, lol) - just that everyone did it for one reason or another, in this case rationing.

fftopic: Granted, many suitings may have had a fair share of flat front trousers, but you still never saw vast numbers of them like you did until the war. Understand that you also had the Depression in '29. This also called for a measure of rationing, as well.

But prior to '29, during the Jazz Age (my favorite period, bar none) all I've ever really seen is nice, full pleats. Oxford bags, 'English Drape' trouser cuts that drapped straight from hip to cuff, box pleats, etc. Always with exceptions, of course, but as a rule. (However going back far enough, pantaloons were flat front, so take your pick!)

Anyways -- back to the jacket. lol Blue trousers would indeed be hard, but if you found the right shade to play back with some of the more subtle stripes, it could be a really cool look. I'm still partial to gray flannels and cream, though.

So this guy had his suits monogramed INSIDE the suit. No Tommy Hilfiger all over his freakin' body. Class.
