How has your taste in leather jackets changed over the years?

I guess it depends on the situation and weather. As I get older, I’m wearing g more weather appropriate clothing. Not so much the unlined leather when it’s 20 degrees out, more like the mid-thigh parka if you know what I mean.

WRT leather, I’ve gotten more of an appreciation for subtle dark or oiled browns, and appreciate (some) aging. Some leather, or rather, some owners seem to take pride in punishing their hides. Yes, it has an appeal, but some nicer jackets look best when they’re allowed to age gracefully. Just my 2 pesos I suppose.

Also, when weather is poor (snowy, cold, rainy), I’m looking for something that’s made for it. I have a few vintage Fjallraven, Filson etc where before I may have tried to sodieresis through in a cross zip Schott.

Taste has gotten a lot more expensive over the years.....

But changed? Not really, I'd say expanded but I still enjoy the same styles I've always had.

Reviving this thread as it's warm these days and I've been wearing a jacket from a well known commercial brand in blue suede leather.

I got it at a sale (paid like 300€) and it was kind of a superfluous buy because I just did cause I thought it fit me really good (and I still think it does). It is kind of a cafe? board? racer. It is partially what made me find this forum, because while I really like the color, I found the lining felt quite meh and I knew there were better things out there, I was simply unable to find them in physical stores.

Now, after all these months learning around here, I've taken it out of the closet for the warmer months. It's not only the lining what bothers me, but the extra leather panels, like on the sleeves, to cut down on costs instead of using larger pieces. I almost feel it bittersweet to wear it, I feel I look good and cool, but it just doesn't bring me the same joy as wearing my Vanson Highwayman or my custom Thedi B3, which are too warm for these days.

Now I don't know what to do with it. I'm still using it, its flaws don't bother me functionally but they bother me mentally. They are there, telling me "You could do better than this" but also "I will last you for years despite my mediocrity, you don't realistically need anything better". Then I check on eBay and I see these were sold mostly for around 250€, but as low as 180€ and as high as 400€. And for that money I can have some fun gambling on some of the Chinese brands aggregated by Tailor Brando. Or buy a second hand Schott. Or increase my budget and get something else, but as I'm always in rainy places that aren't as warm it's just not worthy for me to spend much on a summer jacket unless I can layer underneath it.

TLDR: Thank you TFL. **** you TFL.

1. I’ve always liked leather (bags) but never had the time to sink into and learned about leather jackets.
2. I thrifted a vintage A-2 long ago, but it was slightly baggy. I held onto it until I had the time to seriously learn about leather jackets.
3. I finally had the time after a decade or so of waiting. I sold the A-2. I started out liking A-1 and Cossacks. I’ve bought 2 Cossacks and started experimenting with different hides.
4. I bought a vintage G-1 leather jacket when the opp presented itself.
5. I’ve warmed up to crosszips after years of learning about leather jackets. Looking at 1930s-1940s aviator styles, J-31 and D-pocket.
6. I’ve always like natural leather’s development over time. I initially like Teacore but after seeing it fade, I’ve learned to like LW’s chrome-tanned never-fade. I’ve learned to like grainy leathers, which took a bit of time.
