Help Identifying Schott Jacket (184S or older?)

Hello everyone,

First of all, I’d like to say thank you — the members of this forum have already helped me many times, and I really appreciate the knowledge and advice shared here.

I have a few questions and would be very grateful for your input:

  1. Identification – Could you help me determine if this jacket is a Schott 184S, or perhaps an older version?
  2. 1757278678742.png
  3. 1757278704149.png
  4. 1757278629970.png
  5. Value – What would be a realistic price range for it on today’s market?
  6. Practical use – Do you think it’s a good option for a winter jacket?
    • Alternatively, would I be better off wearing my Cal Leather cross-zip CHP jacket (which I love and usually wear in warmer months)? Or maybe it would be possible to find some kind of dedicated liner/insulation piece to wear under the Cal Leather CHP for colder weather?
    • Sizing – Is size 46 in this model as large as a “regular” 46, or does it run smaller?
    • Accessories – Is it easy to find a used fur collar that would fit this model?

Thank you very much in advance for your advice and expertise!

Best regards,

Best regards,

Could be a 184SM or it could be a 600 series. There should be a tag in the packet that says.

I bought my 184 for $100 with liner and collar, but you gotta get lucky or be patient to find one that cheap. I've seen them on sale as high as $400. Personally, I wouldn't pay more than $200 for a 184sm at the most. They are just too ubiquitous to pay more than that imo.

I wore mine a lot this last winter. It worked great with the liner and collar down to around freezing. I do wear a lot of layers though. It doesn't get much colder than feeezing where I live.

I've seen the faux fur collars on offer on eBay for $50ish. Not sure if the collars work for every Schott or if you need to get the specific one to match the jacket model. I believe you can buy a new one from Schott... at least, I seem to remember seeing a Lounger talk about doing that very thing here recently. You might search the site and see if you can find it.

My 184 is a bit large. I usually wear a 38 and I probably could do a 36 in the 184 from the early 1990s (which is my era). And that's part of the challenge with these Schott bombers: they've gone through different eras and each one is slightly different, so you can't say specifics about the sizing.

But the 184SM has been a good jacket for most of its life, and remains so. That's why I wouldn't buy any other model, personally.

Thanks a lot for the detailed answer Nathan, that was really helpful. I especially appreciate the price range info — that’s exactly what I needed, since I don’t want to overpay for something I could get cheaper. I’ll definitely check the tag to be sure about the model.

One more question though — is the faux fur liner warm enough in winter to wear the jacket just over a t-shirt, or maybe over a shirt and blazer for work?

Thanks again!

I have no idea how cold winter is where you live. Is it warm enough for Southern California? Yes. Is it warm enough for North Dakota? No.

Also, the collar traps heat surprisingly well. I don't wear mine in the winter without the collar.

Again, I'm talking temps down to freezing and I should add that I always wear long johns in the winter and usually a sweater as well.
