Legend has it that Jews were made to wear fox tails (one, on their hats). In order to move on after this humiliation, their rabbis decided to elevate the hat with many fox tails to use as a "crown" Nowadays, I am told, deer fur is the less expensive option. Even at that, the shtreimel cost $2400 or 1800 GBP.That more brownish colour of this style is what I've seen worn in North London, rather than jet black in this style.
Saw quite a few (along with all the various other options in this thread) being worn during a long, rerouted bus journey through that part of town, on a Sabbath, on the way home from Euston Station. Not seen one from above (or below) before; interesting construction. Reminds me somewhat of a Cossack hat, which probably follow given what I understand to be the geographical overlap in point of origin of this style?
