Anyone been to the Culver Hotel? -- More specifically, the bar, Duke's Hideaway? I haven't been yet, but I just learned that the hotel was owned by Mr. John Wayne himself. Hmmm.

I still think "The Shootist" was one of the greatest movies I've ever seen, even if it was his last. Ron Howard was good, too. I can still remember the first time I saw it and my Dad pointed out that one of the fan belts in the saloon squeaks...

My all-time favorite John Wayne movie has to be "The Quiet Man", a classic directed by the legendary John Ford.
What's not to like about this picture?
1)Maureen O'Hara in Technicolor is surely any Irishman's dream, and "The Quiet Man" would be timeless for that alone.
2)Wayne's performance is brilliant, but what really stands out is that he is playing a regular guy with real feelings and emotions--no army uniforms, no indians to fight, no cavalry coming to the rescue--just a great performance.
3)The supporting cast is unmatched--including great performances by Victor McLaglen, Barry Fitzgerald and Ward Bond.
4)The scenery is breathtaking--it makes me want to go home to Ireland--and I'm not even Irish. I'm Scottish!!.
5)To top it off The Quiet Man has the greatest fist fight ever captured on film.

This weekend, in spite of all the rain we've had, Winterset, Iowa is sponsoring a 100th birthday for John Wayne, who was born there. The house his family lived in is still there, a tiny thing.

Should be a marathon of movies this weekend. I have never seen The Quiet Man, want to see it someday soon. My favorites:
The Searchers. Some say it is the best western ever filmed.
Stagecoach, with it's wonderful cast of characters. And Wayne playing the Ringo kid, who hitches a ride, coming into all their lives "like a god out of the desert."
The Man Who Shot Liberty Valance
Also liked the Ford cavalry trilogy, especially She Wore a Yellow Ribbon. Wayne actually sniffles on screen, or at least I think he does.
Lots of celebrations this weekend.

While I do love "The Quiet Man", I must say my heart belongs to "3 Godfathers". It's a little known Wayne flick but I love it. Bank robbing cowboys, a baby and redemption, what else could you ask for?
My other favorites include:
"True Grit"- "Come see a fat old man sometime!!"
"Rooster Cogburn" -I hear that Katherine Hepburn giggled like a schoolgirl around the Duke. lol
"Big Jake"-Ok, it may not be the highest quality, but it's fun!!

I always like seeing Wayne in films with a strong woman co-star. Wayne, as we know, could eat up the screen, so big and powerful was his personality and presence. When he was with a woman onscreen who could hold her own, sparks flew.
Which is probably why he made such good movies with Maureen O'Hara, beautiful, fiery, red-haired, the two could play off one another. I also liked him with Gale Russell (Angel and the Bad Man).
Another actress who could more than hold her own was the legendary Marlene Dietrich. They made Seven Sinners, The Spoilers and Pittsburg together. I saw Seven Sinners some years ago -- classic Dietrich in Navy whites singing her "Boys in the Navy" song and Wayne tall and handsome, holding his own against a most formidable actress.
