Yes, you certainly don't see scenes anymore like the one in The Big Sleep, where Marlowe meets the book shop girl (of course she must work with books if she's wearing glasses!) and he asks if she must wear her glasses before he shows any interest in her. Then she does that classic "***y librarian" thing, taking off her glasses and shaking out her hair, and lo and behold! Marlowe can finally see that she's pretty!

Oddly in that scene of The Big Sleep, Marlowe is actually playing a *** man. As Geiger's book store is a appreciationo exchange. So I guess a girl in glasses can change a man...

Miss Henline, "How to Marry a Millionaire" has fun with Marilyn Monroe's character not wearing her glasses and running into things. Unlike most movies the moral was she should wear her glasses and she'll find Mr. Right.

I assume you're refering to the novel? (I haven't read it yet). What exactly is a appreciationo exchange?

I think you're right, It's been a few years since I watched the film. But Geiger ran a rare bookstore, so I guess it was two book stores across the street from one another.

What I refered to a "appreciationo exchange" was back then the appreciation industry (in this case, *** appreciation) was different than today. You'd "rent" your appreciation and then return it when your done with it.

Geiger ran one these with the front of a rare book store.

And trivia for you... Geiger translate in yidish as a man who keeps a younger man. There are some *** references in 40's films if you know what they're talking about, because the books they were using to make the films were quite harsh and the directors couldn't put that on the silver screen in those days.

Now enough about this and back to eyeglasses.

I paid a thousand dollars an eye, and financed it. I paid $50 a month for a couple years till it was paid off. Now it's down to about $700 an eye. Most eye doctors have some kind of financing plan.

You might need to wait a couple years till your prescription stops changing.

I had lasik done in January '05 and my Mr. had it done in August. We both love it after over 20 years each of wearing glasses. Also found it to be affordable in our area considering how many office visits it included.

Your new glasses picture is one of those great movie and TV ploys, cute but studious, intelectual (brainy) women with glasses on become classic beauty & femme fatale with glasses off!

Congrats on the new specs. Last time I had to go to the place in Sears and all they had to pick from in frames looked like glasses at the "lost and found" in an orphanage that were never picked up.

Very classy! That style with the coating on the rims is called Zylo.

I recently discovered that I wasn't going to get any younger and I'm old enough to be appalled at the face that looks back at me in the mirror. I decided to wear what I like regardless of popular fashion and vintage has always appealed to me. As part of my plan to age gracefully I got me a pair of perfectly round glasses off of ebay. They are refurbished from the 20s-30s. They are plain silver with the cable temples and nose saddle. The lenses are kinda small too. I had my optician put my prescription in them and they turned out fabulous. I liked them so well that I got a couple of backup pairs in case they break. My face isn't as pretty as yours but still they're the best looking on me of any glasses I have ever owned. I making my own fashion statement with them.

Incidentally, I wear my hair pulled back like that too. It seems to go with the glasses.

Neat Specs!

There is nothing that finishes off the vintage look like a pair of vintage specs. I don't wear anything but originals, I do have new lenses in them though. Besides looking great, they usually only cost about $10. What's not to love?
