This look has been growing for a while now and certainly before Mad Men became "a look".
I don't find this any more Mad Men than I see any guy in a hat and think Don Draper.

Years before MadMen started in 07, there were threads on the FL about the newer more European inspired slim suits with high armholes.

Even Brooks Brothers started featuring those Thom Browne designed skinny charcoal grey suits back in late `06 or early 07, before Mad Men had appeared.

BTW, those Banana Republic displays for MadMen, are nice, but dont really remind me of the show.

Basically, the article tells people that you should not dress like the characters from Mad Men, but then goes on to say how they love the show and it is the world's fault for not letting people dress that good. But the atricle also blames the wearer... so its random but a good dose of the hate-orade.

Yes, they criticize people for imitating Mad Men and then they show a picture with some real boring dudes and a sharper looking guy in suit and hat. But it doesn't work I tell you!

None of the people in those photos look good. It looks like they are wearing costumes, most likely because they didn't do a hint of research on the subject, and for them, it's a trend. The 40's and 50's are better anyway

It's funny, if you pay close attention, whoever wrote the article really loves the show, they quote very specific character and plot points whihc I think is quite funny and true, the photo of the group of people look awful.

No wonder it's on "Something Awful" because it is. The writer obviously did little research on the matter of the Mad Men trend or current trends in general. Plus, like you mentioned the article contradicts itself several times. Yes, Mad Men inspired me to get old fashioned glasses and skinnier ties, but I've been into the Golden Era style years before the show premiered. In fact, I've been wearing fedora's since November 2004.

The best thing is, Mad Men is only going to last six seasons, the creator even said so, can't find the link, so when this all ends and we are still wearing our style, that writer will eat some crow.

And as far as the modern folks having the vintage trends, I can think of some places with a little more sixties flair that Hugo Boss. Indochino for instance, man are their suit lapels stingy.

If only that were the case! In fact, it will be the opposite; we've all heard Indy comments, Inspector Gadget comments, etc. and now we'll be getting the Mad Men comments long after the show burns out.

It seems the public has an underlying desire to dress well, to look sharp, and popular characters sometimes raise this phoenix. Unfortunately, I think alot of people quickly (within seconds) realize wearing nice suits, nice shoes, etc. requires a bit of patience and determination. As such, they tend to ridicule this feeling that makes them uncomfortable.

So they fall in love with it for a time, and then burn it to the ground afterwards. And it's a cycle modern society doesn't want to let go.
