Finding Neverland and Somewhere in Time

Hi, Seth,
I was at an art show opening in my hometwon of Atlanta years ago and was told that the background music was from the film 'Somewhere in Time'. I pooh-poohed it as a chick flick. Fast-forward to last year when my library was weeding the VHS collection so I am now the proud owner of 'Somewhere in Time'. I love this movie. Still haven't seen 'Finding Neverland' as it is constantly on loan.

Finding Neverland is a touching movie. Much more than entertainment.

I hadn't seen Somewhere in Time either until recently. I had seen the poster in Pasadena a couple of months ago but didn't really take it into consideration. I'm glad I saw it.

Everytime I'm back visiting someone's like, "Did you know Somewhere in Time was filmed on that island right out there?"

I really loved Finding Neverland! (And no, not just because of Johnny Depp... well... ) I have always been obsessed with the story of Peter Pan-- I guess you could say I have a bit of a Neverland complex.

I loved the portrayal of a dedicated writer in Finding Neverland. The way it showed Barrie taking almost everything he saw and turning it into a masterpiece was amazing. One of my top five favorites.

I remember seeing "Somewhere in Time" at the theatres when released so many years ago.That soundtrack helped motivate me into classical music.The music,Rachmaninov,was a large part of the enjoyment of the movie.Not until later did i really appreciate the costumes,setting and acting.

Mackinack or the likes. No cars allowed. My great uncle worked on that film -- it's his pride and joy at that -- and I guess the island has a little annual celebration of the movie. My great uncle tries to fly out for it every year.

Somewhere in Time...

I watched it with a good friend of mine recently and we still agree that it's one of those films you just cannot get out of your mind knawing away, as much as we'd like to.
Reeve's method acting is quite forgettable, unlike 'that' piece by Rachmaninov.

I like Somewhere in Time also. I found out recently that there is a Somewhere in Time fan club (http://www.somewhereintime.tv/insite.htm). I would love to attend one of their weekends at the Grand Hotel, if they ever do one again.

They do the Somewhere in Time weekend every year at the end of October. The 2008 dates are Oct. 24-26 according to the Grand Hotel website

I love "Somewhere in Time", too. If you liked that movie, read Jack Finney's other time travel book, "Time and Again". It's similar, but the world he creates is so elaborate that it would be impossible to make a movie of. He also wrote "The Body Snatchers". What an imagination.
I loved "Neverland", too. I saw Jean Arthur as Peter Pan on Broadway in December 1950 with my grandmother. One of my earliest memories. I went through a total Peter Pan obsession when I was about 6, between seeing the original play and the Disney film, and the Mary Martin/Cyril Ritchard TV version.

This is Art Bell's favorite movie and after hearing him describe it on the air, I rented it to see what he was talking about. It is a great movie, but I hope someday it is updated in a redo.

Nothing against Jack Finney, but it was actually Richard Matheson who wrote both the novel and screenplay of Somewhere In Time. Between this, the three films of I Am Legend, The Incredible Shrinking Man, and a bucketload of the best original Twilight Zone episodes (some of which I just watched in the SciFi Channel TZ marathon), Matheson's contribution to filmed SF/fantasy is pretty impressive.

Anyway, I have always loved Somewhere In Time. (And with all the talk of its great score, how about a little recognition for John Barry?) And I recently saw Finding Neverland for the first time and liked it a lot, though I wish it had stayed a bit closer to the facts (e.g., Barrie did not spike the audience with orphans at the premiere of Peter Pan - the adult audience immediately loved it without any coaxing.)

Doc, you're absolutely right. Where did I get that idea? I think it's because the professor who tells Chris Reeve how to go back in time is named Finney. This may have been a tribute to Jack Finney, but clearly that's the only connection. The method for going back in time is identical to the one Finney used in his book, basically similar to Harold Hill's "Think System".
Anyhow, "Time After Time" is a great flick, and if you liked it, try Finney's book, "Time and Again".

Time After Time is indeed a great flick - but that's the one with Malcolm McDowell as H.G. Wells... (A funny story about that one: I saw it during its original theatrical release in 1979. The date in 1979 that Wells travels to in the story was the very same day that I saw it! Talk about a bizarre coincidence.)

I tried to read Finney's Time And Again once, but I found it tough going for some reason... My favorite time-travel SF novel, of the many I've read, is probably Isaac Asimov's The End of Eternity.
