Eelskin shoes

I recently acquired a pair of eelskin Western boots. They look quite sharp, I think, but I'm concerned that they last me at least long enough for me to get used to them. They just seem fragile, with material so thin that it has me fearing it might easily tear.
Anyone here got any experience with eelskin shoes? Any tips on keeping 'em from falling apart?
