Cigars in humidor

I have been given a cigar humidor. To take advantage of its controlled humidity, do I leave cellophane wrapped cigars sealed in the humidor, or do I remove the cellophane?

It is your choice. The cellophane gives them some protection if you are like me and have no order to my humidor and from time to time need to ***** through it to find the cigar of choice. But in terms of humidification has little to no effect.

This is a frequent debate among cigar folk, and the answer seems to be do as you choose. I take mine out of the wrapper. It just looks nicer.

Speaking of humidors, is there anything special about those pyramid shaped humidors? Why are they serial numbered & so expensive if they are nothing special?

As Scott says, they look nicer, much nicer in the humidor. The only reason to leave them wrapped is if you plan on traveling with them, maybe to a buddies house to smoke it there. Or if you have a tube, just put the unwrapped cigar in there for the drive over. If traveling by air, they definitely must stay wrapped. Even though I have a small travel humidor for travel in the checked baggage, I still leave those wrapped for the excellent protection the cellophane provides. TSA agents are no respecters of fine cigars.

I uncertain whether I have been convinced to leave cellophane on my cigars, or I'm doing it because of laziness or inertia (Nero Wolfe identifies inertia [of human beings] as the most powerful force in the universe). Regardless of the reason, cellophane stays on.

It is as good a reason as any I can think of!

Cello does protect delicate wrappers in the humidor from contact with its neighbors.

If you age your cigars for any length of time, the cello can also protect them from taking on odors and flavors for other cigars they lay beside. I wouldn't want a Padron Ani maduro swapping character with some Ct shade Fuente, for example... or especially some "flavored" cigar. Shudder...

A very good policy! What were those.... Lars something or other with patchouli and other horrid essential oils??? Some people love them, but the guys I used to hang with referred to them as dog rockets.

Lars Tetens. That is the abomination of which you speak. His cigars, to put it politely, ****. I have had the experience of smoking not one, but two of them in days past and that will live with me forever. To give credit where credit is due, the construction an draw were perfect, but the smell of the things! Getting them to my lips was the hard part, as the ****** things smelled like a French *****-house. Ghastly. Flavor? An indistinct fruity taste, not unpleasant you understand, but not what a cigar should taste like either. *shudder*

As for the cello, on or off, as you choose. I leave 'em on out of laziness.

I leave the cellophane on, mostly out of laziness. But I've never heard of cigars taking on the flavor of others simply by being in close proximity. They certainly don't keep separate rooms for each smoke at the cigar shop (except for the flavored ones, which you shouldn't have anyway). As a general rule, people worry too much. Worrying is bad for your cigars and your smoking pleasure.
