The middle one is the goods with the curved back shank and undulating fall along the front shank to the vamp.

I liked these so much decided to make a pair.

Papperskatt Beautiful boots. The hardest boots to pattern are a button flap Balmoral. Any balmoral is degrees above other foot wear in difficulty to master.

I've been more and more interested in starting to make my own shoes lately. There's a bespoke shoemaker that lives relatively close to me and who offer courses, I'm hoping to be able to afford one in a not too distant future. Or I'll just try it myself by trial and error (my usual way of learning)...

There is a fellow in your neck of the woods named Janne Melkerson who is one of the best shoe makers in the world. He also takes in students.
I will be putting them in the line. I always make the first pair for me to see how they work out.

Yep we all are. I am myself saving up right now to be able to have some shoes/boots made by bigshoe. From what I have seen of his work....EXECELLENT! I would have already placed an order if my darned money tree would just do something for me! BUT soon.....lol! I know I will soon.

Agreed...That is the shape that really screams vintage and class for sure!

would very much depend on the last shape. as discussed on this thread, modern makers seem reluctant to attempt anything as contoured as the teens-early 20s boot lasts. or possibly they're just indifferent / oblivious to the difference.

although i've bought some modern balmorals by Jeffrey West and Septieme Largeur, the last shape still falls quite short of those earlier boots, although the overall 'look' passes.

I cant wait to see those tarsal strap boots myself!
Also to carry on this discussion I have bought a couple pairs of new made ankle boots in the past that had the unshaped ankle that left me feeling unsatisfied, but through some wear they eventually gained a bit of shape to the ankle, but still nothing like the vintage ones had.

Not Balmorals, but it's interesting to see they have these boots with tarsal straps:

I'm not sure that the straps look right on a grained boot. Also the straps seem a little shapeless compared to vintage ones.

the ******** the grainy boots appears to be harking back to the loose strap you find on old football boots, rather than balmorals.

Work continues on the Tarsal strap in between the stuff we do for money. This is Alyssa Lenell the Queen of the 31-15 watch for her she is going to be one of the great bespoke shoemakers of the future.
