Happy semiquincentennial USA!

My Grandfather’s young leg in the upper right as his older siblings and parents celebrate another 4th back in the day.

Today Ive got a few of the old recurve bows out to play with. Once in a while the question surfaces in the archery circles about wearing a brimmed hat when shooting. Ive shot with a fur felt fedora for years and in my opinion, as long as its not a stiff western hat or more than a 3" brim, things work fine.

Today its a modern Stratoliner, and a 62 year old Wing Presentation takedown bow with no sights at 20 yds. Sure doesnt look like the brim caused me any issues! lol. If anything feeling the string on the edge of the brim gives a little feedback that Im at a repeatable anchor point

If youre an archer, use a brimmed hat like all the big bow guys from the 40s and 50s did... looks way cooler than a ball cap and you can shade your eyes in bright sun.

Quick question on hat sizing: do most hats from one brand run the same size? I’m asking because i bought a Stetson Open Road Royal Deluxe (7 1/4) and it fits loose. I also just bought a Stetson Pinnacle (7 1/4) and it fits perfectly. Just curious if this is common or if most hat brands generally size the same. Thanks

Any mass produced hat factory will show variances in the sizing. It is an aspect of mass production. I only have 3 Stetsons and they have been consistently right in their sizing so I think it is the luck of the draw and best to buy a factory hat in person to be sure.

It's not uncommon for modern hats to have some minor variation with sizing. I've had two different versions of the same hat that fit slightly differently. There's still a lot of actual human hands in the process, including joining sweatbands and installing them.

Lol, I guess this is one more reason to buy a custom. Sent you my head tracing last night, looking forward to the hat!

Conversely, being the the raison d'etre of the lounge is vintage, I would also suggest exploring older hats.

The felt on modern hats is very appreciably different to vintage. Even top quality 100% beaver felts do not replicate the finest vintage hats. In general, older hats have thinner, denser felt. This means they shape easier and have good durability.

Of course, they made inexpensive hats back then too, so not every old hat is necessarily going to outshine a new custom overall. I have custom hats that I wear and enjoy, I've made hats for myself with modern felt that I wear and enjoy. But if my house was burning down and I could only save one hat, it's gonna be a vintage Stetson and not a modern custom.

When you run out of hat rack and wall space.... then you stack things up on a guest room bed and make guests sleep on the sofa. At that point youre about 20 new hats away from needing to evaluate things... maybe. Anyone who brings the subject up better have a big wall of hats themselves or they may be ignored lol

Or at the worst having 2 homes filled with hats in various locations and an office filled with them, both annoying your wife and amusing your business partner. Good thing my wife never comes to Florida. The amused business partner needs no "handling."

I think I have room for one more hat that lives in it’s own box and then I’m going to have a problem.

Question being; at what point does this require an intervention? lol

HAS (Hat Acquisition Syndrome) strikes hard.. and fast. Before you know it you are up to your elbows in hats. And you get.. the look… every time a new box hits the door step. ”oh what’s that.. ANOTHER EMPTY BOX”
