Military 'woolly pully' sweaters

I'm afraid our WP season is coming to a close here in Middle Tennessee. For the past couple of weeks we have had mild weather–mild for this time of year.

I may get another few days of wear out of them, then back to the cedar chest until next season.
As an early eighties Marine I love me a wooly pully under my utility blouse.

I am sorry to hear that. It is still WP season over here, I am pleased to say, although there have been a few days when they are only morning and evening wear. This mid-afternoon I am wearing my black WP. I hope my WPs get a few more weeks wear this year!

I've seen some news footage of British armed forces wearing the jumper. Always sharp and strictly pro.
And Royal Marine Commando YouTube snippets occasionally pop up. I'd say the Royal Marines have the sweater crown for their overall kit ensemble, just the right fit; however, the Royal Navy roll cannot be beat
sweater-wise sartorial speaking. Chicago's clime remains cold and my olive drab green pulley is tops,
along with my Irish Standoun blue cable fisherman knit. The latter is the warmest sweater, perfect for
outdoor active wear. There are still the ''tried and true'' in this world.

Very nice to see you back and I agree with all you have said! Let’s enjoy our WPs for the next few weeks until the season changes.

I’ll DM you sometime soon as I would be interested to hear your view on the current situation in US, which is off-topic here of course’

I spoke too soon. It has cooled down here the last few days. The WPs have been put to good use.

Nice image of the late HRH Prince Philip (left) as Colonel-in-Chief of The Corps of Royal Electrical and Mechanical Engineers (REME).

I have owned many woolly-pully sweaters. Good items,so long as well made from trusted providers. Fakes abound. In my experience, I never liked the circular "crew neck" versions but the "V" neck versions were more comfortable for my (admittedly) large 18-1/2" neck.

I have owned a few v-neck Woolly Pullies in my time, but I am more of a credit neck man and all my (many) current WP's are crew necks. I have been wearing these sweaters since my schoolboy days in 1970s Britain and have only ever worn pure wool versions from trusted providers.

You write in the past tense: do you still have any WP's?

Mercurial Midwestern April has so far spread cold chill with intermittent warmth,
necessitating continual sweater wear Michaelmas, Hilary, and now Trinity term.
Veritas.
That is good to hear. For me it is now WP weather in the evenings and early mornings. Roll on Autumn, 'season of mists and mellow fruitfulness'.

As that day's hue and cry upon the fox.---Chaucer, The Canterbury Tales

I wore my bootleg 101st Airborne long ago days A2 leather jacket to a doctor's appointment
this morning, expecting cool breezes blown down Lake Michigan but the tide had turned.
Spring has most definitely arrived in all her sunlit glory with mild temperate breezes.
I much rather favor autumnal gray leaden overcast skies beneath which crimson dappled maples and oaks show and spill blood leaves with elms shivering topaz jewels in brisk wind.
Recently seen Prince William wearing beret and woolly pulley among troops. Dash and slash
done right. Man makes the sweater when worn well, yet sweater sets high bar standard.

My Wooly Pullys are all crew neck as well. Been wearing them since 1977 or so. Still have my original one. Although, it has shrunk over the years. I guess I didn't wear it often enough. But, perhaps, it has to do with the weight I gained when I broke my leg.

We are in full Spring here in Middle Tennessee. No more WP for me.

Full spring in Middle Tennessee is probably quite hot.

My first Woolly Pully was also in 1977, when I was an 11 year old schoolboy. I think you says that yours was acquired when you were serving with the US Army in Germany - remember when we were allies; I hope we shall return to US-UK friendship in saner times.

Very much agree with you about Autumn. I missed the Prince William footage - do you have a date and/or context for it? There are some old pictures of him in a WP when he was serving, in his pre-beard days.

Two, maybe three weeks ago. Believe its occasion a regimental visit, seemed routine detail, but William certainly fits the soldier's bill in all particulars.

Nota bene amicus: I've O'Neill's Vibe Shift traverse domestic/West scene. Worth a look.

I never made it to Germany. I was out of the Army by 1977. If I remember correctly, my first WP was a Barbour, made in England.

This too shall pass, and we will be allies once again. We have too many coinciding interests not to be.

Actually full spring is quite nice in Middle Tennessee. Generally highs are in the low 80s with low humidity. It doesn't get really hot until July and August.

I probably stashed a couple or three. I've come to much prefer the easy donning/doffing of full zip fleece jackets, not to mention the flame resistance offered by some USGI fleece jackets. No possibility of moth damage is a bonus.

Low 80s is hot enough for me, but the temperature would be mitigated by low humidity and cool nights.

London in the summer is a bit off a 'heat island' and worst of all the heart lingers well into the evening. I am glad I now live in the leafier Southwestern suburbs rather than the centre, where I lived for many years. I enjoy the winter, spring and autumn (Fall) here very much, of course. (WP weather.)

Yes, Barbour used to make a WP: I have had a number of those over the years, notably in Derby Tweed. These days all my WP's are made by Outdoor Knitwear, including the DT.

Yes, I know that this too shall pass. I have good faith that we shall be allies again. After all, we were reconciled with Uganda after the fall of Idi Amin.

I have to be honest and say that I find natural fibres more comfortable and there are good ways of storing wool to make it moth proof. I hope the WP's you have stashed away are safe and that you will revisit them in the autumn.
