Thanks for starting this thread Jeff, I guess its out of the bag now that i have returned to the arena in a small way. Five months ago a good friend that I hadn't seen in years called me asking for help. She had a major medical issue and had lost many of her hatting skills due to a brain surgery and needed refreshing. Of course, I cannot say no to her so I started working with her in the hat shop 1 day per week. As we started getting her straightened out skill wise, I discovered that she still had about 20 felt bodies that I had sold her 20 years ago, not being beaver but rather rabbit, that she had never used. For those of us perfectionist, this is perfect. They have had that long to densify ( is that a word) creating a really tight felt so, rather that asking her to be paid for my labor, I would use the felts to make hats and share the proceeds. So far it has worked out well as I have perhaps the only employee in history to regularly pay my boss for the opportunity. I must confess, I'm enjoying it again but my supplies are limited as well as equipment. So, the plan is to make roughly one hat per week until we run out of felts. I cannot take orders because I'm so limited i

This makes my purchase of, what I believe was the first of the series, even more special. Thank you for the opportunity I did not have even a few years ago. I was a lurker here for many years before I began posting, after picking up the refurbishment of first, my own hats, then friends', and then amassing a larger collection to be worked on. I guess this is how it all starts these days.

I had the chance to speak to Rodney Allison last week or so and even he invoked your name when talking about the folks who could do wonders building hats by hand. When I saw that these (and a few others) were actually available, for whatever the reason, I had to let the rest of the folks here who appreciate the amazing work done to create these hats, know that they were still out there. I was a bit concerned, knowing that you do still post here and did not make mention yourself that these were being sold, but the benefit to the group of knowing, I was sure of. Thanks for stopping by here and letting us know about these hats we are eagerly looking to see when they drop.

All the best,
Jeff

My pleasure Jeff, Rodney is a good friend and one hellava hatter. You are exactly right about how it starts. In my case we had a vintage clothing store, supplied hats to the film industry and every time we sent out hats they came back needing work so, somebody had to learn to repair. I collected equipment and ribbons for 15 years before offering to the public and I believe the rest is known.

Best of luck, Art. I still cherish the Black Cherry and the Glacier fedoras you made for me.

Here is one of arts he custom made for me out of 100% beaver View attachment 752711
wow, that's an early one for sure Indyguy. Although I don't have the paperwork anymore, I can tell you with a high degree of certainty this is a pure beaver hat. In all the years I worked, I only made a handful of rabbit hats. It didn't make sense to me to make a bespoke hat and NOT use the best materials available so almost all of my clients went beaver.
