Detachable leather? What is that?
The Carter detachable sweatband system was this design where the sweat was held in with these little metal buttons. The idea being the sweat could be easily replaced. Unfortunately it didn’t catch on and went the way of Betamax… a better mousetrap maybe for the customer that never became standard. Although I’m sure in a factory setting it was easier to machine sew on the sweat as opposed to sewing the buttons at the designated intervals and then fitting the sweat in.

Mostly you see them on Stephen L Stetson hats in the US. I believe I have one on a Canadian hat as well most likely Biltmore.

Here is a closeup of what it looked like under the hood

I fly out of Malaysia tomorrow on my homeward journey (with a layover in Japan). Unfortunately, my long-COVID symptoms returned this week so I am still not confident about returning to the trucking job. I might end up hiking the Appalachian Trail for a few months (I have already done the GA and half the NC sections), hoping that might strengthen me some more.

That's still a few months away. On the immediate horizon is Tokyo, which assuages somewhat the sting of leaving my beloved Melaka. Last evening, we had a boys night out at our favorite Pakistani restaurant and I am fully conscious of how much this city and its people mean to my life.

Today will be busy with packing and goodbyes. I am dressed down in the new Canadian beater. A few photos are included.

Happy end to your work week friends. More from me in the next few days from the Land of the Rising Sun.
