That was exactly what I was referring to; no kidding. I said "recently" thinking within the last 100 years, and mainly American.

But really, honestly, I stand corrected (considering it's been over 100 years - and I can't do math, haha)

And don't forget plaid! I can't find the picture, but I believe it was Senator Jack who had a sharp plaid dinner jacket posted a few years ago.

Bogart, among others, also pulled off a white dinner jacket with black silk lapels. We have a thread on that somewhere too.

I have learned something. I just never thought of a tux as a 'dinner jacket' which I have imagined as something less formal. Tomasso, thanks for the link to the site with the history of the tux.

Have owned two tuxes - got a fair bit of use out of them, I'd say probably 20-30 times a year, gigs, formal dinners, stagework. Have to say though that I'm not overly keen on dinner jackets. I really prefer a housecoat or tails!

I prefer black tie over white tie because of the difficulty in tying the white tie. It is made of a thick cotton pique material that is difficult to tie. The black silk tie is much simpler to tie.

I have one white tie outfit (tails) and three black tie outfits (Tuxedo or dinner jacket--which is the proper designation.) My wife and I attend one or two white tie affairs a year and a few black tie affairs.

Close but actually the Prince of Wales, later Edward VII. Poole and Company (Savile Row's founders) created it for him in about 1860. Known as the dinner jacket in GB, it was introduced at the Tuxedo Park Club, NYC, and became known as the Tuxedo in the US.

If you mean that the Duke of Windsor innovated the midnight blue color, you may be right.

Actually, very dark blue evening clothes existed before the Duke of Windsor but he made the colour popular.

I own one white tie outift, and one black tie outfit, the latter which is a single-breasted shawl collar with grosgrain lapel facings. I am usually swamped to find occasion to wear the latter, much less the former, and the occasions are quite few and far between (usually orchestra concerts or proms). There aren't enough classy parties here where I live.

A. Sagner & Sons, which was based in Baltimore, marketed itself as a "value" brand with low prices. Below is an advertisement from the September 30, 1940 issue of Life, advertising suits for $25.

There's an abandoned clothing factory in downtown Baltimore, Lebow I think. When they closed down it looks like they just abandoned the place complete with the clothes.

PS - Don't own a tux yet. Last time I wore one I was 16 and it was my mother's wedding to my stepfather. I'll be putting one together later this year though as I have a felling it's going to be needed for a couple events I'm going to attend.

I've got what seems to be a 1980s or possibly late '70s D/B dinner jacket and trouser, as well as a rather informal 'tux-tails' piece that I wore to my secondary school-leaver's prom. I've also got some 1950s patent leather dance shoes that I found in a charity shop last October. Sadly, I very rarely get to wear them around here, but I'm sure that once I go to University there'll be more functions.

I own 9 tuxedos myself. I don’t wear them often, once or twice a year, but I can’t help buying them when I see a good price (most are from eBay). My wife is nice enough to humor me.

Black watch tartan shawl collar – bought it on a whim and it’s a bit too slim fit for me so I don’t imagine I’ll ever wear it.

Single breasted notch lapel – first one I ever bought. I’ll never wear it again but I keep it anyway.

I also have a morning coat, which I will be wearing to tea at The Plaza later in the year to celebrate my wedding anniversary.

Okay, I'll play. (I also like to see old threads revived now & again.)
I own one tuxedo... Single breasted notch lapel.
I got to the point where I found myself renting a tux once or twice a year and realized it was worth buying.
As I bought it several years ago, it has more than paid for itself.
My only complaint is that the trouser waist seems to have inexplicably shrunk a bit.
