Not technically on the side of the road, this could be my favorite building of all time:

Roark's Tavern in Monticello, NY. I used to go there in the late '70s-early '80s, and it was ancient then.

I was there this past year and it still looks the same, including the iconic sign, except it's all in color. haha

This McDonald's was opened up in what was originally The Denton House, which was built in 1795. It is in New Hyde Park, NY.

Are there still any drive-in restaurants with curb service anymore? I don't know if there were very that many and I doubt there were any before WWII. But there was only one in my hometown, technically outside the city limits, I think, but I think it counts. It's no longer in business, I'm afraid. There have been drive-ins that had neither curb service nor inside seating, which includes a lot of Dairy Queens, I think, but I don't know of any around here where I live now. Don't know of any with curb service either, which is not to say there aren't any. I don't get around as much as I used to.

And speaking of, it looks like the All-American had neither either but at least you could go inside to order.

Where I went to college, there was a Dairy Queen on the main street (High Street) in town. It was only open in the summertime and I guess most of the patrons were locals, especially teenagers. High Street was one was and the thing to do, it seemed like, was to drive down High Street in front of the D.Q, turn go up the next street and make another pass down High Street, repeating as often as necessary. I don't know what they did when they got tired of doing that.

I see that both schools have fences around them. The high school I attended did not have a fence but I was surprised to see one around it when I was last in town two years ago, although it is now the middle school.

The Teapot Dome Service Station was originally located on Hwy. 410 between Zillah and Granger, WA. It was handcrafted by Jack Ainsworth in 1922. He built it inspired by the Harding Administration Teapot Dome Scandal. It is now located in a City Park.
