Indeed. I just noticed that after you mentioned it. I see his hat looks to have a thin brim binding. I can't say for sure about the concentric brim stitching though. It looks there's some of that on the underside of the brim, but I don't know.

John--yes, a real hat. He was the speaker at a convention for a high school group I was a member of in about 1967 and I recall he was wearing one of his houndstooth checkered cloth jobs.
